Why Get your Piano Tuned?
A piano has approximately 220 strings. They exert about 40,000 pounds of tension on the plate and frame, and about 600 pounds of down bearing on the bridges and sound board. Seasonal changes in the humidity, as well as the normal continual decrease of static tension, cause all pianos to go out of tune eventually. Even if they are not played. This is especially true if the piano is moved from one area to another.
How Often Should I get My Piano Tuned?
It is recommended to get your piano tuned at least every 6 months. Many who use there pianos alot such as teachers, muscians, performance venues and recording studios may get it tuned more often. Such as every 3 months. Realistically, however, many people prefer not to spend the money to get the piano tuned even every 6 months. That is why, while I reccomend that a client gets there piano tuned every 6 months, I find getting it tuned once a year to be acceptable.
Can I Wait Longer Then A Year To Tune My Piano?
Not getting your piano tuned regularly can create several problems. It will not sound very good. This can discourage people from playing it. This is especially true of young students who are just starting out. It is always good for beginning musicians to learn on an instrument that has been properly maintained. In addition, if a piano has not been tuned for more then 1 1/2 years generally it will need more work done to bring it back to pitch. I technician will have to do multiple quick tunings before he or she can do the fine tuning to A440. We call these tunings pitch raises. Generally the longer it has been since a piano was last tuned the more of these are needed to stabilize the instrument. I have done as many as 3 before. As you can imagine this can be very time consuming and also cost more money then a normal tuning would. So while it might not necessarily do long term permanent harm to skip tuning your piano, it is definitely worth it to not put off your next tuning for to long.
